The death on Sunday of Daniel Viflic, the 16-year-old boy critically injured by an anti-tank missile fired at a school bus by Hamas, coupled with the arrest of the teenage assassins of the Fogel family in Itamar, meant that Israelis began the Passover holiday in sombre mood.
Daniel had been at the Soroka Hospital, Beersheba since the attack two weeks ago. He died from brain injuries, caused by severe shrapnel wounds.
The Itamar massacre, perpetrated in March, is considered important enough to warrant a joint, on-going investigation by Israeli security and military personnel along with the police.
A formal statement from the Office of the Prime Minister in Israel yesterday explained that Hakim Maazan Niyad Awad (18) a high school student and Amjad Muhammad Fawzi Awad (19) both from the village of Awarta about two kilometres southwest of Itamar had confessed to planning and perpetrating the mass killing for which they have shown no remorse.
The young men are affiliated to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). According to Israel Army Radio, Amjad said he had been unaware that there were two other children in the house - in addition to the three they had killed. If he had known that he would have also stabbed them.
