Jews Among Victims of Morocco Cafe Bombing

Morocco.BombIsrael’s celebrations for the British Royal Wedding have been marred by news that a pregnant Israeli citizen was among those murdered in yesterday’s suicide bombing at the Argana Cafe in Jamaa Lafna Square, Marrakesh, Morocco.

Michal Weizman and her Moroccan-born husband, Massoud Zikri had travelled with their two-year-old son from their home in China to Marrakesh to visit Zikri’s family for Passover.

According to The Jerusalem Post, the Israeli Consul General in Shanghai has confirmed that  the couple had left their two-year-old toddler with his grandmother while they went into the city. They were in the cafe when the suicide bomber detonated the explosives. A British national and two French people were also among the 14 killed.

Meanwhile as most of the world’s eyes and ears are trained on Westminster Abbey for the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton – just named by The Queen as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – there is one spot in Israel concentrating on more private nuptials. What’s more, the groom’s parents hail from the U.K.!

I do not have permission to name the families - but I am delighted to report that an open-air chuppah – Jewish marriage – will be celebrated just outside Karmiel, Galilee, Northern Israel in total tandem with the royal ceremony at Westminster Abbey, London,

The festivities are due to start at 1.00 p.m. local time and will thus coincide with the start of the Royal Wedding at 11.00 a.m. BST. My thoughts and prayers are with my friends even as I am glued to the live TV broadcasts from London.

I hope to post a report about the Royal Wedding from an Anglo-Israeli perspective on Technorati Women later today.
