I write sick at heart and in the pit of my stomach about the quite astounding anti-Jewish hatred which pervades and froths over the readers' talk-back sections of the Telegraph Online.
Should they possess either faculty, I appeal to the better nature and plain common sense of the newspaper's moderators to vet readers' comments before publication. Surely this would prevent their festering in cyber-space for hours - half-days on end - propagating vile lies about Jews, Judaism and Israel and giving false credence to those behind them?
I believe the same few people, using different pseudonyms, trawl the internet looking for ever more opportunities to spread their muck. What bigger space is there than the reader-reply sections of internationally regarded news outlets?
Other online publications moderate comments before publication. Why not the D.T.? I'm beginning to wonder if its strange policy puts this paper in breach of race relations legislation. After all, the internet is not immune to ( international) law.
This week matters reached crisis point.
- First came the story about a bio-film of Bernard Madoff. The hateful comments were almost to be expected as Madoff is Jewish.
- Similar and quite gratuitous nastiness followed an item about Dr Conrad Murray's conviction for Michael Jackson's death, although both men are black.
- But far worse happened yesterday (11 November 2011) with the almost parodically gross filth which accompanied the story "Unesco Suspends New Projects Over Palestinian Row". This followed the United States' decision to cut Unesco funding as it had granted the Palestinians membership without their having an internationally recognised state.
"... What you mean is that I don't like Jews, and you haven't got the guts or the spine to say so. That's right, I hate, loath and despise Jews, because Jews are hateful, loathsome, and despicable people, as your lies prove yet again."
Some weeks ago an antisemite was summarily booted off my ‘MyTelegraph’ blog after I complained. But the hate-filled comments should never have appeared. Surely, it is the Telegraph's professional duty to guard its decent readers and users' interests. For now it appears to serve those of our enemies. For shame!
