Above is a link to a really interesting potted history of modern Iran (formerly Persia).
What it does not relate is that latter-day Iran’s hatred for Israel stems from the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s special relationship with the Jewish State and his close friendship with many of his prominent Jewish subjects until this time of his exile and death.
There are large communities of ex-pat Jewish Iranians living in London and Manchester, UK. I recall vividly visiting one home and being privy to a photograph showing my host socialising with the Shah.
This same gentleman told me that at the height of the revolution, Mr. Shapur Bakhtiar, Prime Minister during the last month of the Shah’s reign, visited Manchester and was hosted by the local community. Mr Bakhtiar was murdered in 1991.
“So sad, so strange, the days that are no more”.
