Well Met By Internet – For Israel!

Edinburgh.Poster.2009During this age of feverish anti-Israel, antisemitic hatred, it is rare and wonderful to meet a new non-Jewish friend.

Indeed, I find Mark Ulyseas to be a singular and special human being as he does more for the Jewish community than many born inside it.

In offering me an ‘Andy Warhol’ moment, Ulyseas, a travel writer, has also afforded me the chance to express my views in a way denied to me by many conventional Jewish forums.

Such is the Internet at its best: A unifying force for people who have common cause but who would otherwise never meet.

Here, I repost the interview Ulyseas gave me on his ‘My Telegraph’ blog in the hope that it may encourage more people to view Jews, Judaism and Israel in a friendly way.

By unpleasant coincidence many of our fellow bloggers at ‘My Telegraph’ are most hostile to Jews and Israel, including  one named “What Is The Difference Between Zionism and Nazism?” whose latest piece is entitled “Not One of The ‘Chosen People’? Oh, Dear!”

In complete contrast, Ulyseas says:

‘I hope to clear the debris of hate and misconceptions for/of Israel, to lay bare the real and pulsating life of a people that have borne the brunt of ignorance.’

Interview:

  •  Why is antisemitism taboo in the West, whereas anti- Muslim or anti-Christian views ‘appear’ to be acceptable, generally speaking?

You must be joking! Antisemitism is alive, well and bites you on the cheek!CHEEK.BITE

For a short time after World War 2 in Britain it was considered well mannered to be nice to ‘the Jews’. The community had acculturated without losing its identity and had already done much to make its mark in society. However when I was child in the 50s and early 60s, it was thought correct to be a Jew at home and an English person elsewhere. There may have been a sense of the friendliness being superficial and this has been proven many times since the 1967 Six Day War when opinion formers like The Guardian newspaper overturned a previously ardent pro-Israel policy in favour of the Arab world.

The same story has been repeated elsewhere in Europe and in the United States despite its massive Jewish population. Even in Germany where Nazism and antisemitism are officially outlawed there are dozens of examples of the vilest anti-Jewish behaviour.

I don’t believe there is much anti-Christian sentiment, except among radical Islamists who hate everyone not following their form of Sharia Law. Many people in the west appear vaguely apathetic about Christianity whereas their loathing of Islam is generated largely by radical Islamists’s gross behaviour. This has grown increasingly with the constant and increasing spate of terror attacks worldwide since 2001.

Until recently I accepted the view that the situation would be corrected only by a modern version of the Medieval Battle of Tours but seeing what’s happening within the Arab world even as I write, I believe the Arabs’ exquisitely wrought house of cards will eventually just tumble down. The genie, all differences considered, is well and truly out of the bottle!

    • Do you think that ‘outsiders’ confuse the Jews with the politics of The State of Israel? If so, why so?

Of course outsiders confuse Jews with the politics of The State ofNetanyahu.Others Israel. It is natural that they should do so. It was established as the Jewish state and offers a near-total Right of Return to all Jews wishing to live here.

If I were a disinterested – non-biased – non-Jew reviewing the situation I suspect I would also confuse the two.

  • It has been said that Jews are God’s ‘Chosen People.’ Please clarify.

Chosen.People.JokeI could reply with a smart Jewish joke but under the circumstances I’ll treat the question with the serious respect it deserves! Rabbis and Jewish scholars explain that we were not ‘chosen’ by the Almighty but that we elected to follow the teachings of His Torah (the body of Jewish sacred writings and tradition including the oral tradition); to become a Kingdom of Priests, holy and separate from other peoples and to be “a light unto the nations.” Too often we fall sadly short of this ideal.

Is Israel the sole democratic State in the Middle East? (Please expand on percentage of different faiths in the state as well as freedom of speech, civil rights etc. in Israel)?

Even before I check the facts I insist that Israel is still the sole truly democratic state in the M.E. – albeit sorely flawed. Until the recent flood of local revolutions, despots and villains ran the regimes on and near Israel’s borders without fear of reckoning or redress – unless they were overthrown by equally unpleasant personalities. I am unsure whether any current regime changes will alter the situation as I fear that the radical Islamist Muslim Brotherhood will rush to fill the various vacuums.

Ephraim.KatsavIn Israel there continue to be risibly awful instances of corruption - and worse - even among its highest officers of state but most of them are apprehended and punished. This is true democracy in action. This same energy is shown by the happy existence of many extreme left-wingers fighting for civil rights and conversely by the racism espoused by others on the right.

According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics, the population in 2008 was 75.4% Jewish, 20.6% Arab, and 4% minority groups. The religious affiliation of the Israeli population as of 2005 was 76.2% Jewish, 16.1% Muslim, 2.1% Christian, and 1.6% Druze, with the remaining 4.0% not classified by religion.

There are gaps in Civil Rights, largely because the Orthodox rabbinate holds so much influence but organisations like the Progressive Israel Religious Action Centre campaign for social justice and have won many battles both for individuals and groups.

Further, Israel permits entry to thousands of non-Jewish refugees and is the only country in the area where there is full freedom for gays, bisexuals and trans-genders.

Does a Class System prevail in Jewish Society? For instance are Yiddish speaking Poles ‘lesser’ then those that speak Hebrew? And is there a preference for Ashkenazim over Jews from Yemen or Iraq?

Do you mean ‘Jewish’ or ‘Israeli’ society? If you mean both, the short answer must be that the class system prevails in Israel just as it does in Jewish society, despite any contrary protests.

Jewish people and their Arab neighbours prize knowledge as much as material success. I was surprised to learn recently for example, that a modern Bedouin sheik now values a woman’s scholarship as much as a traditional dowry.

But while many of the traditional prejudices like those you cite are fading, others are taking their place. Israel, a society under semi-permanent siege, can be both harsh and driven. People work long hours for low wages while food and goods are often ridiculously expensive.

A fellow immigrant has observed that in employment-terms, there are many layers with native Israelis at the top. Surprisingly, it is often new Jewish immigrants – not Arabs – who are at the bottom and the theory is that they must wait their turn to be accepted in order to gain work. Certainly immigrants are often dismissed erroneously as fools. This is due to problems of communication and acculturation.

  • How do Israeli Jews, who are multinational and multicultural in nature, blend into a cohesive force? For example, an Indian Jewish family as compared to a family from Russia?

This may be your most important question. I am only six years younger than The State of Israel and while my family was never actively ‘Zionist’, its existence was burned into my brain from earliest childhood. Indeed that my maternal great-grandfather made a failed attempt to settle in ‘Palestine’ from England during the 1930s is part of family lore.

Nonetheless I feel quite different from, if most respectful towards those immigrants from other countries. Yet Israeli society is beginning to cohere strongly if slowly. This will happen more swiftly as people from separate backgrounds marry and also as the Hebrew language continues to develop. Even now, less than a century since his death, I am sure that Eliezer Ben-Yehuda would find it hard to recognise the pure Hebrew he pioneered as a modern language. I think it will take at least another 60 years for Israel to cohere in full and I must reflect most sadly that several more wars will help to solidify that congruity.

  • Are there any cultural exchanges between Israel and the Arab world? Do you feel people-to- people cultural exchanges can bring about a change in the mind-set of your neighbours?

What an absolutely wonderful idea! But first, we have to persuade too many of our Arab neighbours that Jews are neither dhimmi (second class) nor animals to be loathed and slaughtered. I am delighted to have made personal friends with a couple from an Arab village next to Karmiel and also to have been acquainted with a non-Jewish European who has married a local Arab. It is from such personal contacts that wider understanding grows.

I maintain that – writing in ‘broad strokes ‘– Jews and Arabs have far more in common than either of us do with our gentile counterparts. There are the life-cycle customs like circumcision, swift burials and the similarities between the kosher and halal dietary laws. Both traditions have a form of religious marriage contract and there are many Middle Eastern delicacies we both enjoy...

  • Lastly, do women have equal rights in socio-economic and religious spheres of your society?

I have a feeling this will be a bone of contention long after the Arab-Israel conflict is healed! Israel is a M.E. society and therefore still most patriarchal. While Israeli law prohibits discrimination, (Employment (Equal Opportunities) Law, 1988 ) too many men, Jewish or not, still see women as adjuncts, despite all the women who have reached the top in Israeli society. Perhaps this is why a man like the cashiered former President Moshe Katsav thought most naively that he would escape justice for his crimes of rape, sexual assault and other sexual abuse.

To date women do not have complete equal rights as they are known in the west, neither in the workplace where the battle for complete equal rights and equal pay continues, nor religiously, where they are treated as inferiors – no matter how much Orthodox women may deny this.

I belong to a ‘Masorti’ congregation whose religious customs are Orthodox but which is run on egalitarian principles. This means that women take a full part in synagogue life, helping to lead services and serving also on the management committee. Indeed a woman recently became the congregation’s chairman.

‘Be My Jewish Enemy On Facebook’

Israel’s and Jewry’s Enemies on Facebook

Today Jewish groups and individuals scored a great victory.

Due to the efforts of Aish.com, the Orthodox Jewish outreach group and individuals like the academic, Dr Andre Oboler, Facebook has deleted the group "Third Intifada" from its website.

Aish.com said: “Free speech has its limits and Facebook cannot be used to launch a terror war against Israel. This shows that activism does make a difference.

“But the fight is not over. Palestinian groups are simply playing cat-'n-mouse, having reposted the "Third Intifada" page on Facebook!.

“Beyond this, Facebook still has dozens of groups calling for violence against Israel and the killing of Jews.”

Dr Oboler added: “The 3rd Intifada Page has now been closed by Facebook. About time too.”

However  even as I write, the hate-filled pages are being re-launched and there are still many groups urging death to Jews.

Mark.ZuckerbergSome months ago, Facebook’s Jewish founder, Mark Zuckerberg – or his staff - invited me to become his Facebook ‘friend’. I had to ignore this request.

I felt unable to enjoy even a virtual friendship with a fellow Jew craven enough to allow financial considerations to override his loyalty and duty to his own community.

Previously it was generally agreed that Zuckerberg and co wished to appear unbiased towards the Jewish community and its concerns. Fair enough.

But now enough is enough. He has created a Golem big enough to gobble him up. Is he man enough to destroy it before it is too late?

Who Will Guard ‘The Guardian’?

‘The Guardian’ - Unguarded

C.P.SCOTTHere  I publish something a little different showing how The Guardian newspaper - the darling of the liberal intellectual elite - mires itself in money-grubbing, tax avoiding hypocrisy.

It’s as well that the great C.P. Scott, Harry Sacher et al are not living at this hour. I hate to consider how they’d react if they were!Harry.Sacher

Arabs ‘Depraved Savages’ Says Melanie Phillips

Melanie Phillips on Israeli TV

Today as we walked in the ‘Jewish’ heartland of Karmiel we were stopped in our tracks.

Barely yards before us on the pavement we saw an Arab car instructor kneeling on a blanket deep in  his devotions while his (Jewish) student waited patiently for him inside the car.

Such is ‘apartheid’ (sic) as practised in Israel.

Now watch journalist Melanie Phillips at her most eloquent if angriest best as once more she slams the Israeli authorities for their lack of correct verbal defence and explains why, in the wake of the Fogel family murders she felt forced to generalise the Arab world’s ‘moral depravity’, describing them as ‘savages.’

I’d love to know, if like us, she has any Arab acquaintances.

News Bite Straight From Nazi Germany!

Following a Violent Attack At SOAS

CHEEK.BITEWhere Christian tradition advises followers to turn the other cheek, this week a Jew-hater decided to bite one!
The incident occurred outside London’s School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS)  when the victim (pictured right) was  allegedly attacked by one of two men at a Celebrate Palestine event being staged as part of Israel Apartheid Week.
The JC.com reported how four members of the Israel advocacy group, Stand With Us visited SOAS to make a peaceful counter-campaign. They went inside the university and chatted amicably with several students. But the atmosphere changed when one man allegedly started spouting  anti-Jewish sentiment, even remarking that “the best thing the Jews had ever done was to go into the gas chambers.” No wonder that the visitors said they felt like Jews in Nazi Germany!
A member  of the Jewish group asked if he may film him. The man agreed but another man, described as “big and burly and of Middle East appearance” told him he did not have to be filmed or interviewed, then allegedly launched himself at the victim, grabbed his camera, punched him and then bit his cheek.
The alleged victim was taken to University College Hospital. It is understood that the two men, who have no connection with SOAS, were arrested on suspicion of affray and were held in custody at a north London police station.
Later, Manchester-based Joy Wolfe a former journalist and  now UK Chairman of Stand With Us said: "It is unthinkable that in the UK people can be prevented from expressing their opposition to incitement, hatred and blatant antisemitism which, given the outrageous comments about Jews this undoubtedly was.”

The Super Moon’s a Purim Balloon!

PURIM.2.12“who knows if the moon's...”

“who knows if the moon's
a balloon,coming out of a keen city
in the sky--filled with pretty people?
(and if you and i should
get into it,if they
should take me and take you into their balloon,
why then
we'd go up higher with all the pretty people
than houses and steeples and clouds:
go sailing
away and away sailing into a keen
city which nobody's ever visited,where
always
        it's
               Spring)and everyone's
in love and flowers pick themselves”

(e. e. cummings)

I was not the only one to note the coincidence of the Jewish festival of Purim and the rare ‘super moon’ which illuminated the world on Saturday evening.

Joe Dowd of Plainview Patch, New York, USA .wrote:

“There's a lunar perigee tonight, when the moon passes at its closest point to our planet in 18 years (356,577 kilometres; 221,567 miles.)

“The event — also called a “super moon,” occurs when a new or full moon is at 90 per cent of its closest orbit to earth. The moon will be full and at 100 per cent on Saturday night, and clear skies are predicted.”

DSCF0275

Now look what we saw in Karmiel, Galilee, Northern Israel …

SUPER.MOON.ST.MICHAELS.TOWER.GLASTONBURY.TOR.SOMERSET

and compare it with what was seen in Somerset, U.K.

But even more exciting is what happened indoors in Karmiel – both on Saturday night at the Kehillat Hakerem Synagogue and then on Sunday afternoon at a variety show hosted by the municipality along with various sponsors.

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves …

Best wishes for a Purim sameach – happy Purim to my Jewish readers - and a very good week to everyone else!

Arab Apartheid Means Death To Jews!

First I’d like to publish a popular definition of the South African term ‘apartheid’.

Apartheid was a system of legal racial segregation enforced by the National Party Government in South Africa between 1948 and 1994, under which the rights of the majority 'non-white' inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and minority rule by white people was maintained.”

“Racial segregation in South Africa began in colonial times, but apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into racial groups ("black", "white", "coloured", and "Indian"), and residential areas were segregated, sometimes by means of forced removals. From 1958, black people were deprived of their citizenship, legally becoming citizens of one of ten tribally based self-governing homelands called ‘bantustans’, four of which became nominally independent states. The government segregated education, medical care, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of white people”

Well, this most definitely bears no resemblance to anything I’ve ever witnessed in Israel.

  • I’ve no picture of the big smiley Arab lady who took up almost two seats on the bus from Karmiel to Acco when we travelled there last October.
  • I can’t show you the smart Arab diners from local villages who frequent the local bars and restaurants in Karmiel.
  • Nor do I have jolly snaps of Arab fellow customers at the local branches of the Supersol and Yaish supermarkets.
  • Nor yet can I prove the truth of the kindly conversation I had with the woman in strict Moslem dress in the corridor of the trauma unit at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital.
  • I am unable even to show you the group of Arab women enjoying yesterday’s sunshine in Karmiel’s Galilee Park.
  • Nor even shots of our Arab neighbours going about their daily business in the apartments near mine.

But I can show you the following which I invite all the Israel haters to read, mark and digest:

Such Stuff As Dreams Are Made Of …

Not L.A., USA – but Nahariya, Israel!

‘All the leaves are green

And the sky is blue

Just strummin’ on the beach

On a late winter's day …’

NAHARIYA 003Hands Up! Don’t hate me for bastardising universally loved lyrics, just read on and you’ll understand why.

On Tuesday we moseyed up to Nahariya, about 27 kilometres north-west of our home in Karmiel, Galilee to find a lone guitarist playing his heart out on a poetically deserted beach.

Loath to disturb his reverie, we did not intrude. NAHARIYA.DREAMING.02Who is he?’ we mused. ‘Where’s he from?’ ‘What is he playing so intensely?’

If anyone can name him  and celebrate the musical mystery I’d love to hear from you.

Meanwhile we saw relatively few people at thisNAHARIYA 008 popular, 30s-built resort as March is the end of the closed season with many shore-front attractions still shuttered  and few hardy tourists bothering to brave the brisk winds.

Although aware of Nahariya’s more serious industries, the town reminded us  of British resorts like Southport and Brighton where many locals have little to do aside from shopping and sitting sipping coffee while life passes them by …

But NAHARIYA 001Spring is about to burst in the Northern Galilee, with profusions of wild flowers starting to show their faces to  the sudden warmth of the renewing sun.

NAHARIYA 005

Even as winter ‘s end trails off in fits and starts,  Nahariya’s holiday-air continues year-round with pretty parks, swaying palms and white-clad buildings, even if many now show signs of sad neglect.

Sex ‘Just Like Skipping’ – Learn About It At School!

This piece first appeared as “Sex ‘Just Like Skipping’ – Learn About It At School!” on Technorati.

Abandoned.Trailer.Cleveland.TexasOn the day Americans reeled over revelations about the teenage gang-rape of an 11-year-old Texan schoolgirl, lurid details emerged about a paedophile-led satanic sex cult in Wales, U.K.

The same 24 hours  saw further outrage in Britain over news of five-year-old school children  being exposed to graphic sex education,  with material comparing the experience to ‘skipping’.

The Thanksgiving attack on the unnamed victim in Cleveland, Texas was filmed by the perpetrators on their  mobile phone cameras but the case was exposed only when one of her classmates alerted a teacher to the evidence.

In an uncanny echo  of Jodie Foster’s Oscar-winning portrayal of Sarah Tobias in The Accused, the girl was raped by 18 young men and teenage boys in an abandoned trailer. Jodie.Foster

It has been claimed that the she was over-sexualised, dressed older than her age, wearing clothes and makeup more appropriate to a woman in her 20s.  Further, the girl had often been seen  in the town’s rundown area of “The Quarters” before the incident, fraternising with teenage boys at a playground.

The police affidavit states that the assaults occurred in a house and an abandoned trailer and that the girl was forced to undress and threatened with being beaten if she did not comply.

Meanwhile in the U.K., members of a satanic cult in Kidwelly, a seaside town in West Wales, were  on Wednesday found guilty of raping and performing a series of perverted sex acts on children and adults.Colin.Batley

The self-named ‘high priest’ of the group which indulged in occult rites is 48-year-old Colin Batley, who with five other alleged members insisted during the five-week trial that no cult had ever existed.

But their claims were dismissed when Batley was found guilty  of more than two dozen acts of sexual perversion linked to his activities in the cult. Three women, including Batley’s wife, were also found guilty of sex-related charges. The trial jury is still deliberating over further allegations and individuals involved in the case.

Further to the two criminal cases, The Christian Institute in Britain has claimed that very young school children are being exposed to explicit sex education lessons before they are ready, leading to the over-sexualisation of childhood.

According to the report in the Daily Telegraph, The Christian Institute research revealed one book aimed at five-year-olds containing cartoon images of a couple having sexual intercourse and another comparing sex to skipping. A further book intended for children barely older referred to ‘anal intercourse’ and ‘oral sex’.

All these stories are related as they highlight the preternatural sexualisation of young children and their brutalisation.

It is a pity that the so-called school material has been publicised by a religious organisation as it is a grave matter of common decency – and common sense – which affects everyone, whatever their spiritual beliefs.

Young children are asexual; they do not leave ‘Eden’ until early puberty and it is only the late 20th century’s rank commercialisation of sex that has forced children to think about such matters long before they have the emotional maturity to cope.
